2022 Improvements to the Axe Throwing World Championship

The World Axe Throwing Championship is a yearly tournament put on by WATL (World Axe Throwing League) in 2021, the championship was held in Fort Worth, Texas. Since the 2021 tournament, there are several improvements have been made to the tournament. One of the biggest improvements for the 2022 world championship is that all of the tournament will be at a single location, whereas in 2021, they were done across 5 separate locations due to the size of the event and the space needed. With the 2022 tournament happening at Fox Cities Exhibition Center, the entire tournament will all happen in one single location. For anyone who has been to a large axe throwing competition, you know just how much more convenient it is to all happen in one location.

The Fox Cities Exhibition Center is also directly connected to the hotel, the Hilton Appleton Paper Valley. This means there is no need to worry about commuting in the early morning to the venue trying to find an Uber or Lyft. Any seasoned adventurer knows that traveling with an axe can be a bit of a challenge. Not only are they bulky and difficult to carry, but they also tend to attract a lot of unwanted attention. There are a lot of assumptions that you are an axe murderer when in reality, you are taking an uber to an axe throwing tournament. Customs officials are often suspicious of anyone traveling with anything that could be considered a weapon, like an axe. In addition, because of safety precautions many times there are strict regulations around how axes can and cannot be transported. If you don’t know the rules, you will have a huge headache.

But if you know the rules, then you will be able to travel fine with your axes no problem.

Here are the things you need to know different types of transportation has different rules regarding how axes need to be stored in order to be transported. Most forms of transportation will allow sharp objects or weapons, but they need to be checked and can’t be brought into the cabin. This is the case for airlines and buses.

Uber

When researching this article, I found axes are allowed in an uber but are not allowed for their package delivery service. How long is an axe throwing session at a venue?

For a smaller group of 5 or less, axe throwing normally lasts about 1 hour at most venues, although depending on the time of day and how busy they are you might be able to get a bit longer. For larger groups, 6+ axe throwing will take about 2 hours. This can depend on the venue but these times seem to be relatively standard for most venues I’ve been to with friends.

How long does axe throwing league take?

An axe throwing league generally takes between 2-3 hours with each individual throwing 4 matches a night. There is also a 1-hour warm-up period where you can get there and throw around to prepare for your matches that night. These times are also assuming that the league is around 20-30 people, anything larger than that, and it might take even longer.

Leagues can also be slowed down by things like board swaps which happen when the target is too chewed up and needs to be replaced.

How long are individual axe throwing matches?

One full axe throwing match is made up of 3 rounds, 5 throws each, and 15 throws total. Individual axe throwing matches tend to be quick at around 10 minutes long. That does depend on how quickly each thrower is and if the match goes into overtime, where additional big axe throws are made.

Those numbers are also just for standard league matches. If you are in playoffs or a tournament you can have anywhere from 3 rounds up to a best of 7 rounds. I’ve even witnessed a championship match last 30 minutes because every single round tied and went to big axe.

How long should you book when going axe throwing?

If you are going with a smaller group, then 1 hour should be plenty of time to get warmed up, figure out your form, make some improvements, and play several games. I don’t think you need much longer than 1 hour if there are only 4 or 5 of you. The last time I went axe throwing with a group, it was a double date, and we were able to get through the safety walkthrough, basic throwing lessons from an axe throwing coach, then play multiple games against each other and a tournament. Once we finished the tournament, we even had enough time to try out some trick throws and challenge our axe throwing coach.

How to get the most time actually throwing

I’ve mentioned this, but how much throwing you actually get to do depends on how big your group is, the smaller the group the more you will be able to throw. If you want to throw as much as possible, just don’t be surprised that all venues will have a safety walk through to make sure you don’t get injured while throwing axes. These safety explanations generally take 5 to 10 minutes. But you can start these earlier if all the members of your party arrive earlier at the venue, then you won’t cut into your time axe throwing.

When you are throwing axes at a venue, you will need to fill out a waiver. Some venues allow you to fill out the waiver online before going to the physical location. If you want to jump right into axe throwing, I recommend filling out the waiver online and submitting it, so you don’t have to sign paperwork when you arrive. Plus, you can easily do it on your phone while heading to the venue quickly so why not get it out of the way earlier.

I’ve seen it so many times it’s a couples night, a double date, and someone decided to wear open-toed shoes to dinner. For dinner, that footwear choice might be great, but for axe throwing, it is not going to be a good time since you are risking your toes. Pros

Short handles have a few pros for axe throwing.

1. Faster rotation. The shorter the handle is, the faster the axe rotates, meaning you can complete a full rotation closer to the target than with a longer handle. There are other factors that affect this, like your flick and the speed you throw but generally handle length is a significant factor for rotation speed. I’ve found personally that faster rotation has helped me land the axe at that ideal 45-degree angle.
2. Allows you to stand closer to the target. Since rotation speeds are faster, it means you can stand and release your axe closer to the target. This can help increase your accuracy since your release point is closer to the bullseye or clutch.
3. Easier to transport. Smaller length means the overall length of the axe is smaller, making it more convenient to transport it can easily fit into a backpack or travel bag. If you are traveling for an axe throwing tournament having a ton of long axes can be a huge headache.

Cons

I consider anything over 15 inches to be a long handle. Again, there is no official number that designates a handle as “long,” but I think this is a pretty solid estimation of what most people would consider to be long. Anything between 14 and 15 I would consider to be a medium or middle ground, neither short nor long.

Pros

1. Easier to control rotation. When you have a longer handle, it gives you more leverage to slow down the rotation if you are throwing with too much spin. This can help new axe throwers or those still working on their form to not overspin their throws and increase their accuracy.

Medium / Middle / Inbetween Handle Length

Like I said earlier, I consider this in-between handle length to be anything between 14 and 15 inches. This is a happy medium between the shorter and longer handles.

Pros

You have the best of both worlds. With a medium-length handle, you get increased accuracy from a shorter handle while still having the ability to control your rotation like you would with a longer handle.

Cons

No real cons. This axe length walks the line between long and short and gives the thrower the maximum amount of flexibility. I can’t think of any significant advantages or disadvantages for this handle length.

In my opinion, the ideal axe throwing handle length is between 14 and 15 inches since it provides the most flexibility with the least amount of drawbacks. This length of the handle allows you to get close to the target easily without having to throw with too much effort to push the axe head through the motion. The IATF states that your entire axe must weigh between 1.5 and 2.5 lbs. It doesn’t further specify the exact weights a head or handle has to be, just the entire unit of the axe.

WATL Axe Throwing Weight Regulations

The WATL states that the entire axe cannot weigh more than 3lbs. This provides a bit more wiggle room than the IATF and has no minimum weight. WATL does state that the head of a throwing axe must be between 1 and 1.75lbs. There are no limits on the weight of the handle as long as the entire axe is below 3lbs.

Now that we know the weight regulations for different leagues let’s look at some of the benefits and drawbacks of different weights so you can make an informed decision on what is the best weight for you.

Light Axe

Let’s start off by clarifying what I mean by a “light axe.” I conder any full axe that weighs less than 2lbs with the head and handle to be a light axe. A more well-known light axe is the cold steel axe gang which initially, out of the box, weighs about 1.9 lbs, but since the handle out of the box is too long, it needs to be cut down. After cutting down the cold steel axe gang, it ends up around 1.7lbs depending on how much of the handle you cut down.

Pros

• Easy to throw: When you are throwing a light axe, it is much less tiring because your muscles don’t have to work as hard. No worries about awkwardly working out a sweat because, like me you didn’t follow through on your new year’s resolution to get ripped.
• More precision: Throwing a light axe is more like throwing a dart than an axe because you are able to be precise without having to overuse your stabilizing muscles.
• More options for axe throwing form: Since the axe is lighter, you can change your axe throwing form to be more consistent. With an axe gang, I don’t need to pull the axe as far as I can get more of a quick flick with it directly in front of me, or I can pull it further back.

Cons

• Hits the target with less force: Since a lighter axe has less weight, it packs less of a “punch,” meaning it will hit the target a bit softer. When a throwing axe hits a target softer, it can lead to it bouncing out when a heavier axe would have stuck. There are tons of other factors that play a role in that, but this does affect it.

Heavy Axe

What I consider a heavy axe is anything over 2lbs with the head and handle. A good example of a heavy axe is The Butcher Throwing Axe (3rd Generation), whose total weight is 2.25lb, and the head weighs 1.72lbs. This axe is designed for axe throwing, so you don’t have to cut it down at all.

Pros

• The axe does more of the work: Because the axe has more weight, it produces more force at less speed. This means you don’t have to worry as much about bouncing out if you tend to have a slower axe throw motion.
• More likely to stick in the target: Since the axe itself is heavier, it is more likely to stick than a lighter axe. There is more than weight to sticking an axe, like having a great axe throwing technique, but a heavier axe generally will help you stick more.

Cons

• It takes more muscle to be accurate: Moving more weight leaves more room for error. There is a reason there is a saying about throwing darts when someone is very accurate and not tossing logs. Once you add too much weight, you can be less precise. This does personally depend I’ve seen people half my size throw the butcher with no problem while I struggle to do so accurately.
• Throwing form requires more of a pullback: This is probably the biggest downfall of heavy throwing axes. To generate the force to throw them, you generally need to pull them back a bit farther in your motion meaning your form is a lot less flexible. When I throw, I generally keep the entire axe in front of my body and use a flick which I wouldn’t be able to do with a heavier axe.

My Opinion

It’s important to note that a lot of this is my opinion from throwing different axes. That being said I personally love the flexibility that light axes provide and think the ideal weight for a throwing axe is right between 1.5 and 1.7lbs. I’ve found my throw is just so much more consistent and precise.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, there really is no “ideal weight for a throwing axe.” It comes down to personal preference, but it is always good to try out multiple different axes to get a sense of what fits with your axe throwing form.
