This list comes directly from my experience as a competitive axe thrower (ranked top 10% in the world... no big deal) and many of my friends who are rated in the top 100 in the world.

#1. The Ace of Spades Throwing Axe (3rd Generation)

The Ace of Spades Throwing axe

Description

This axe is one of the best throwing axes on the market. The Ace of Spades is created by the world axe throwing league (WATL) to be a competition throwing axe. The axe head is extremely thin and features the sharpest blade imaginable, making it ideal for axe throwing. With a long 17 inch handle it gives you the flexibility to shorten or modify it based on how you throw. The blade is a curved design that is meant for intermediate to advanced throwers.

This axes is so sharp that you need to ensure targets have proper backings because it can punch through a target and even damage concrete. There is a reason I've seen this at so many axe throwing competitions.

Personally, I think this is the best throwing axe you can find. I like throwing a heavier straight handle and curved bladed axe, which makes this a perfect fit for me but can also make it not an ideal fit for everyone. I like extra weight since you don't need to muscle it, but I have heard other throwers who prefer a lighter axe because it gives them more control. The reason this is #1 is because the quality is there for every aspect of this axe to make this the best throwing axe on the market. It fits all requirements for a competition throwing axe and is a consistent pick for some of the best axe throwers in the world.

This axe also fits all competitive axe throwing regulations for size and weight, making it ready to throw out of the box no need to cut it down or alter it in anyway.

Axe Specifications

  • Head: 1045 Carbon Steel
  • Handle: American Hickory
  • Blade Finish: Brushed Steel
  • Handle Finish: Clearcoat Varnish
  • Sheath Included: Yes

#2. Flying Fox

Flying fox throwing axe

Description

The Flying Fox Woodsman is a great throwing hatchet; it is one of the most durable throwing axes on the market and is something you will consistently see thrown at axe throwing events. The 3 7/8” bit is hardened and perfect for precision throwing, while the large hatchet eye ensures a solid grip. The Hickory handle is 16” long and provides plenty of leverage for powerful throws.

Personally, I've found the weight of this axe is a bit heavier, allowing you to let the axe do the work. I would say this is one of the most popular competitive throwing axes I've seen.

Axe Specifications

  • The Flying Fox Woodsman Hatchet has a head weight of 1 lbs. 11 oz.
  • The bit length is 3 7/8”.
  • The harden bit and poll make it perfect for competitive throwing.
  • The handle has a large hatchet eye, trimmed to be under 16” (Hickory).

#3. Axe Gang Throwing Axe

Description

The Axe Gang Throwing Axe is a great choice for anyone looking for a quality throwing axe. It features a differentially heat-treated, drop-forged head that can reach a razor-sharp blade edge, while the soft steel body absorbs impact. With a 4-inch blade length, the Axe Gang falls within competition axe throwing sizes perfectly. It also has a hand-picked straight grain American Hickory handle that is embellished with the Kanji characters for "Axe Gang". This stylish and iconic axe is used around the country in axe throwing bars because it is durable and a great price.

Cold Steel stands behind their products and offers a lifetime warranty. The carbon content and lean alloy of this shallow hardening steel make this a very sturdy material that avoids a lot of the brittleness commonly associated with higher carbon materials.

Personally, I know multiple professional axe throwers who use this axe in both the world axe throwing league and the international axe throwing federation.

Axe Specifications

  • Head: 1055 Carbon Steel
  • Handle: American Hickory
  • Blade Length: 4"
  • Overall Length: 20-1/4"
  • Weight: Head 21 oz. Total 32 oz.

#4. Vaughan Hammer Back Throwing Axe

Description

Looking for the best cheap axe? Look no further than Vaughan Hammer Back. This top-quality product is perfect for anyone looking to get into the exciting world of axe throwing. With a weight of 22 oz and a length of 13", it's perfect for anyone throwing in an IATF throwing league since it matches all the spec details. Best of all, it's made in the USA!

This is good for beginner axe throwing enthusiasts, it's cheap and is a good throwing axe but it doesn't have a long life due to its lack of durability. If you have been throwing axes for a while then I would recommend looking at upgrading to one of the top 3 axes on this list.

Personally, I love this axe. I threw my first 81 with a vaughan hammer back and have always had a soft spot for it since. BUT comparing it to other throwing axes the biggest problem is that it isn't as durable. Mine only lasted me two seasons before it broke. There are some other downsides to this compared to other throwing axes beyond durability. The profile isn't really made to be like a throwing tomahawk it is made to break wood, so it can be a bit fat at points which you will need to grind down if you really want to compete at a high level with this axe.

Axe Specifications
  • Head: 1055 Carbon Steel
  • Handle: American Hickory
  • Blade Length: 4"
  • Overall Lenght: 13"
  • Weight: Head 22 oz. Total 1.38 lbs

#7. The Butcher Throwing Axe (3rd Generation)

Description

The straight handles on the 17" butcher make releasing it easier, as well as providing more consistency when throwing. With a large blade it makes it much easier to hit clutches there is almost no down side to this throwing axe in a standard axe throwing league. The weight is well balanced so if you have a good motion it's more like throwing a dart than an axe at times. The generation 3 also has a thinner blade profile so it's much smoother at cutting into wood and less likely to drop out of a target.

This axe also fits all competitive axe throwing regulations for size and weight making it ready to throw out of the box no need to cut it down or alter it in anyway.

Axe Specifications

  • Head: 1045 Carbon Steel
  • Handle: American Hickory
  • Blade Finish: Brushed Steel
  • Handle Finish: Clearcoat Varnish
  • Sheath Included: Yes

#9. The Queen of Hearts Throwing Axe

Description

The Queen of Hearts Throwing Axe gets its name from the heart imprint on the head of the axe. The head is 1045 carbon steel that weights 1.65 lbs. The handle is a straight 17 inch handle made from american hickory and finsihed with clearcoat varnish. The total weight is 2.20 lbs making it in the middle of all the axes we have reviewed so far.

I love the little touch here that gives this axe a bit of personality something you can tie in with an axe throwing name. The profile of the axe is extremely thin so it's great for sticking into a target is is specifically designed for axe throwing. I like the unique look of this axe it is almost a semi curve. This is a really cool axe it feels nice and is balanced properly.

This axe also fits all competitive axe throwing regulations for size and weight making it ready to throw out of the box no need to cut it down or alter it in anyway.

Axe Specifications

  • Head: 1045 Carbon Steel
  • Handle: American Hickory
  • Blade Finish: Brushed Steel
  • Handle Finish: Clearcoat Varnish
  • Handle Length: 17 in

#10. Kraken

Description

This is the heaviest axe we have covered so far and the only carbon steel design with a rubber handle. The kraken throwing axe looks slick with it's all black look and red rubber grip. The curved blade design and weight help it stick into targets.

The thing about this axe is that my preference is wooden handles since they can slide out of your hand more naturally and you can easily customize them which you can't with rubber and carbon steel. I have to be honest though this thing feels still feels bad ass. With 2.89 lbs it's the heaviest axe on this list that isn't a big axe. But that weigth makes it feel so satisfying to stick into a target and makes it almost impossible to bounce off. The down side here is it unlike other axes on this list you can't customize it because it is all one solid piece. With other axes if they break you can just replace the handle or change out the handle if you prefer something else, that is not an option with this axe.

This axe also fits all competitive axe throwing regulations for size and weight making it ready to throw out of the box no need to cut it down or alter it in anyway.

Axe Specifications

  • Head: 1045 Carbon Steel
  • Handle: 1045 Carbon Steel
  • Blade Finish: Dimpled Steel
  • Handle Finish: Rubber Handle Grip
  • Sheath Included: No

#11. The WATL Hawk Throwing Axes

Description

The WATL Hawk Throwing Axes is actually 3 tomahawks rather than one. The reason this is last on the list is because you get 3 lesser quality axes but this is perfect for someone who just wants to get some axes and throw them at DIY targets vs throwing in a competitive axe throwing league.

These axes DO NOT fit all competitive axe throwing regulations for size, blade length, or weight making them NOT ready to throw out of the box.

Axe Specifications

  • 6" Blade To Spike
  • 5mm Thick
  • Tail Spike For Added Fun
  • Paracord Handle Grip
